Women at 40+
40+ women are innovative, sexy, fertile,
talented, successful, and beautiful. Media reporting suggests that
womens concepts of themselves, and societys concepts
of women, are changing:
Pregnancy is up 41% among over 40s
(Guardian, 2002)
Woman giving birth over 40 almost
doubled in 10 years (news.bbc.co.uk, 2002)
Hollywood becomes accepting of the
older woman and gives her sexy roles (Guardian 2004)
Middle age is being redefined (Sunday
Observer, 2005)
Women want to retire later (4 National
News, 2003)
Fashion designer Giles Deacon focuses
on the 40+ woman (Evening Standard, 2005).
However for the women involved these
may be difficult years when they are expected to present as strong,
powerful, and supportive, but may themselves be in need of support.
Media reports are not all positive:
Sexually transmitted disease increasing
in menopausal women (news.bbc.co.uk, 2005)
Nearly a quarter of 25,000 domestic
abuse incidents analysed by researchers involved
women over 41 (Edinburgh Evening News, 2004).
These years represent transition and
potential loss in a womans life. At a time when achievement
and comfort can be enjoyed, many women struggle with physical and
emotional difficulties:
Relationship problems joint
midlife crisis, partners male menopause
Single women with no children, lost
opportunities
Mothers with young children, high
stress, diminishing energy
Mothers with children leaving, sadness,
empty nest syndrome
Career women, needing not to look
flushed when stressed
Physical illness, poor sleep, chronic
pain
Loss of sense of beauty, identity,
confidence
Bereavement
By this stage women are accomplished
carers and copers, skilled at juggling all lifes aspects,
and holding everything and everyone together. While other cultures
give due respect to this, the western woman experiences invisibility,
and her efforts to be an effective manager may be feel unrewarded.
The stress ensuing may imbalance hormones
and worsen physical and emotional symptoms as women approach menopause.
This is a time to really focus on positive health measures and preventative
medicine. Perimenopausal changes are said to start from the mid
thirties.
Using acupuncture, nutrition, homeopathy,
and herbs, we are able to balance the bodies hormones and energies.
Perimenopausal changes, menopausal symptoms, concomitant disease,
stress management, and mood changes can be addressed this way.
